Pebbles Walker scored a pillar-post win in the Subaru BE100 Scottish Grassroot Championship at Scone Palace, riding 20-year-old Shannondale Flight.
“It feels amazing – it was very nerve-wracking leading from the dressage,” said Pebbles. “But you can always rely on Flight. I was just hoping to get the clear and end on a good note.”
The pair led the dressage jointly with eventual third Maeve Sheridan and Hey Pronto, who lowered two rails. With a clear cross-country inside the time, Pebbles jumped last in the reverse-order showjumping, securing a comfortable victory on 30 by 7.6 penalties with the only clear of the day.
“We do showjumping in winter, eventing in summer,” added Pebbles, who was third here last year. “Flight can be slow cross-country because he jumps so big, so I knew I had to go for the time. The showjumping was causing problems, but he hasn’t had a fault for a long time.”
As for how she keeps her veteran in such fine fettle, Pebbles said: “Put him in a field with a rug on and he’s fine!”
Criminology student Sophie Normile rose from sixth after dressage to finish reserve champion on 19-year-old Village Crescendo.
“He’s a perfect old boy,” said Sophie. “The dressage was a bit disappointing but ‘Patrick’s a cross-country machine and flew round in the time. It was annoying to have the first showjump down but left the rest up.
“I’m at uni so I ride when I can, but thankfully Mum does a lot when I’m busy.”
