Izzy Taylor continued her remarkable recovery from a broken leg this season to head the CCI3*-L with Johnny Hornby’s Barrington Boy, who led from start to finish.
“I’m sitting on a beautiful horse who’s jumped a fabulous clear round,” Izzy said. “I know I have done a good job with him – he’s not always the easiest. He’s spooky and going showjumping in a hackamore wouldn’t be my choice but he goes brilliantly in it.”
The pressure was on when the two riders chasing Izzy both jumped clear; a single rail would demote Izzy to sixth. But she did her best to enjoy the moment regardless.
“It’s a privilege to be here, especially from where I’ve come from this year,” she added. “He jumped beautifully whatever the result. My mindset has changed over the last six months, I really enjoyed it. To win means a lot, and it’s not all about me. There’s no way I could be here without my fantastic team at home, the physios and owners who have stuck by me. It really does take a village.
“I think this horse is one for the big time. He was ginormous when he arrived and I didn’t want to love him, but once you’re on him you have no idea how big he is and nor does he.
“He’s such a quality horse. Yesterday on the cross-country he cantered round. He’s really exciting, especially for his very supportive owner Johnny Hornby who’s a rider himself and really understands the sport.”
Emily King finished runner-up on Angell’s Choice, ahead of Ros Canter (Broadstone Lion Man), fresh from her world individual silver and team gold haul in Aachen.
