Harry Horton piloted international debutante JTH Rover to victory in the CCI1*-intro at Scone Palace International Horse Trials, finishing on their dressage score of 29.7. Harry also slotted into sixth with Charlie’s Gem – both rides are six-year-old mares.
“They’ve both done a couple of novices; I thought it was a good step up to get them in the atmosphere and away from home for the week,” he said. “JTH Rover gave me as good a round as I could have hoped for. It was a good place to race her against the clock as we’ve been waiting for ground we can gallop on all summer. She’s a lovely horse and she’s going to Cornbury. Onwards and upwards.”
The winner’s quick jumping gave her a 0.2pen advantage – which she held overnight from the showjumping – over Willa Newton, who logged her second runner-up spot of the event, aboard another six-year-old mare, Cortada.
In third was Philippa Nixon aboard Springfern Quidamity.
The Project Pony CCI-S P2* was an Irish whitewash, with the entire podium going to riders from the Emerald Isle. The two-phase leader Lucy Hope Ryan and Pretty Patterns, a 10-year-old skewbald mare, took top spot. They stopped the cross-country clock just one second over the optimum time to hold runner-up Jonty Purcell at bay by 1.1pen. Hannah Goold and Paddys Best finished third.
