At the Scone Palace International Horse Trials, a course walk is an important and informative part of the event, giving spectators and aspiring riders the chance to walk around the cross-country course. Hosted by a special guest, the walk offers a better understanding of the challenges faced with cross-country riding.
The walk covers the entire course and lasts approximately an hour and a half. Led by an experienced rider or coach, the host stops at each fence along the way to explain how they plan to ride it, offering insight into the strategies involved and the potential difficulties competitors might face.
While participants do not ride over the jumps during the course walk, the discussion often includes detailed analysis of approach angles, pace, terrain, and how horses are likely to react to particular obstacles. The host or special guest will answer questions from the public, making the experience both educational and interactive.
